Barry Keith Grant suggests that genre allows audiences to identify them specifically by their 'familiar and what becomes recognisable characteristics'.

Pop Music
This genre regularly refers to Popular Music, what is current in the music industry now. Pop music could include any style of music. Pop can usually have different elements from different styles including, rock, urban, dance, latin and even country. Pop can definitely differentiate, for example "Britpop" mainly focus' on the pop music that was relevant in Britain in the 90s such as, The stone roses.
Rock Music
Rock music originates from the 'Rock n Roll' Era within music, this including artists such as the King of Rock - Elvis Presley. However, this genre has developed to become much more raw and rough, replacing the acoustic guitar with electric and this then producing bands such as, The Rolling Stones. Rock has many sub-genres and fusion-genres which include: Garage, Metal, Soft, Punk, Psychedelic, etc.
Dance Music
Dance music is mainly based upon electronic sounds to create and produce a piece of music. As the times have moved on dance has became much more technological then it used to be, it's mainly presented upon laptops rather than instruments such as guitars and drums. Dance includes many sub-genres such as: House, New Rave, Trance, etc.
These are 3 of the biggest genres I thought would be appropriate to look at, each one separates of into a sub-genre which could lead to and entirely different sound. Music Genre is quite complex and a specific band/song could be particularly hard to find the exact Genre it fits.
